Legal Services Relating to the Terminally ill Adults (End of Life) Bill

The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill proposes that certain terminally ill adults be permitted to end their lives with medical assistance.

Our dedicated and specialist team provides a unique combination of expertise and experience, meaning we are well placed to advise individuals and organisations on legal issues that are expected to arise from the proposed changes to the law.

Key areas of expertise

Regulatory

Our Regulatory experts will be in a position to advise doctors and other medical professionals and healthcare professionals on any new legal framework and associated regulatory guidance implemented, to reduce the risk of potential disciplinary issues arising from any involvement in end of life situations.

This work has included assessments of the current law surrounding assisted suicide and when liability arises.  Once published, the Criminal Team will be considering how the proposed legislation changes, if at all, the law on who and how a person may assist a terminally ill individual to end their life, what steps are capable of amounting to assistance, the optimal strategy for engaging with the police and what relevant organisations can proactively do to protect itself and its staff.

Our Private Client team specialises in estate planning prior to death and estate administration after death. They are particularly experienced where there are capacity issues or difficult family dynamics. They often collaborate with lawyers in other jurisdictions and will be in a position to ensure that cross border estate planning factors in the varying legislative positions on end of life decisions.
